FaaSten your decisions: A classification framework and technology review of function-as-a-Service platforms

Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) is a cloud service model enabling developers to offload event-driven executable snippets of code. The execution and management such functions becomes FaaS provider’s responsibility, therein included their on-demand provisioning automatic scaling. Key enablers for this are platforms, e.g., AWS Lambda, Microsoft Azure Functions, or OpenFaaS. At the same time, choice most appropriate platform deploying running serverless application not trivial, as various organizational technical aspects have be taken into account. In work, we present (i) classification framework derived using multivocal review (ii) technology ten prominent based on proposed framework. We also selection support system, called FaaStener, which can help researchers practitioners choose suited requirements.
